Directory of Biggest Social Bookmarking Sites

Recently I reported great reviews on Onlywire, a handy utility that lets you bookmark across some twenty social bookmarking sites at once.

I’ve been using it regularily, and noticing some success in the form of, what I term, The Echo Effect of Social Bookmarking.

Today I started on a hunt for the little logo icons for each of the services collected within OnlyWire.  Well, it wasn’t long before my search was off track. 

I found a post with an image that is a mosaic of all the logo icons for more social bookmarking sites than I ever imagined - The Mother of All Social Bookmarking Services Icons by Shakk.  This was interesting, but only made me realize there was a lot of chaff in the Social Bookmarking sphere. 

So how do I separate the chaff from the wheat?  I’m thinking that the biggest and most utalized services will have general traffic volume data available on Alexa, and a back-link check would also help me guage the relative market share of the various social bookmarking services.

This isn’t entirely fair because some Niche Social Bookmarking sites may not appear as big and powerful as the monster sites - but their narrow focus makes then very dominant in their field.  Over time I’ll be finding those sites, and collecting them here.

Another twist - the better sites have a Voting capacity beside each bookmark added by any user.  As Lorelle points out, over time, the bookmarking, voting and article writting about your bookmarks will determine it’s placement and it’s long-term value.  Some of the new services may be diamonds in the rough - places your competitors have not discovered.

Those caviates aside, what I was really after, was to find to biggest SB sites and see how many of these leaders were included in the 16 to 20 social bookmarking sites serviced by OnlyWire.

Within another minute, I had found exactly the List of Social Bookmarking Sites I was looking for.  It’s nice to see that OnlyWire is adding to some of the biggest services - but I see many more opportunities that I didn’t know about.

…and I started to feel overwhelmed…  but then an idea came to me.

I’m including these sites in the next update of www.MyWeb20List.com, but in the meantime, I’ll be registering for each of these services and setting up their link scripts within my browser toolbar.  I wonder how crowded it’s going to get!
